How do ya'll feel about the movie adaptions that have been made?
I personally enjoyed the campy Uzumaki, though for different reasons than I enjoyed the manga. However I just couldn't get into the Tomie movies at all. Same with the Gyo anime. Maybe if they followed the manga more closely I'd find them more interesting? Don't really know. What do you all think?

Yeah I've only seen Uzumaki and I think if I had known it was more of a campy movie, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. I also didn't really like the Gyo anime adaptation. I'm not sure why, maybe because I wasn't a huge fan of that manga. I think that instead of making these feature length films, Itou's manga would do a lot better if they adapted the style Kazuo Umezu uses to make his horror movies. They're all a lot shorter, just like Junji Ito has so many shorter manga. Search Kazuo Umezu on youtube to check out some of his horror flicks in 'Kazuo Umezu's horror theater'

I believe they are all live-action. All the ones that I've seen anyways!

I think Kazuo Umezu's Horror Theater is pretty good. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy his manga or Ito stuff.
I have a small collection of J-Horror currently and that includes all the Junji Ito films that have been released in America thus far. I enjoy them all, but don't quite feel like any of them live up to their originals. They tend to jazz the story up to horror film standards, which is understandable, but that loses some of the charm I find in his stories. They make a good means of introducing friends to Junji Ito though.
My favorite is probably Uzumaki or Tomie: Another Face (which also had my favorite actress to play Tomie, I feel like she really nailed the look and mannerisms). Least favorite might be Long Dream, which was always one of my favorite shorts but the film takes too many liberties for my liking, or maybe the anime of Gyo.
I was very excited when the Gyo anime was announced. Of any of his stories, it felt like one of the best ones to represent through animation over live-action. While I enjoyed it, especially seeing the trademark Junji Ito wide-opened mouth animated, a lot of the changes frustrated me because they felt like trying to cram in a typical style horror film.
I'd love to see a lot of Ito's works adapted to live-action in an anthology format or something. A lot like say the Twilight Zone or something similar; Umezu's Horror Theater is a good example. I really think his stuff could thrive in that format pretty well.

I've actually never seen any of the movies. I need to get on that.

Although I love Tomie, I have never watched any of the Tomie movies. The only adaptation of Ito that I have seen is Kakashi, and although I enjoyed it I kept thinking "Kaoru ... Tsuyoshi? When did this turn into Gravetown?"

I agree.
Although I prefer the Uzumaki manga much more, the live adaption had it's own charm, and I definitely enjoyed it as well. I loved seeing how all of the different scenes from the manga were changed into live action sequences, and the special effects just made it that much more enjoyable to watch.
As for Tomie, I just couldn't really get into the manga, so I never even gave the live action films a shot. Although some time in the future I might try to watch it just to see how it really is. Perhaps the films could give me a new perspective on Tomie?
And with Gyo, I can't say I was completely disappointed with the film. I'm absolutely thankful that another one of Itou Junji's works were adapted. However, I just felt irked at how much they modified the story. I agree that it would be boring if they stayed completely true to the original content, but I feel as if they changed too much of it. I feel the moment lost a lot of its emotional impact by switching it up to make Kaoru the main character instead of the one strapped to the machine. And in my opinion, the addition of the two female characters were just completely unnecessary. I guess it was a bit frustrating to see one of my favorite stories be changed so much, but at least I can be glad that it was even animated.
